MIAMI BEACH TAXI CAB

Enjoying the day and beauty of Miami Beach in the early 1940's. The signal flags spell out 'Elgin American',  with the repeater flag at the end announcing the ships sailing.  Elgin American was a major company through the early 1960's as a manufacturer of compacts, lighters, and costume jewelry as advertised by Lucille Ball and Groucho Marx.  Elgin American also was a recipient of the Army/Navy AE Award,  among others for it's manufacture of munitions for the Korean War and World War II.  The artists father, Allen Gellman, was the President of Elgin American and a recipient of the Horatio Alger Award.

It was only fitting to use signal Flags to spell out 'Elgin American' as Mr. Gellman invented the process for rolling battleship steel plate in 1939, donated his patent to the United  States Government to assist Bethlehem in it's efforts to retool their entire shipbuilding factory. Through this new process for rolling steel, Bethlehem was able to manufacture warships for the United States Navy in approximately twelve percent of the time previously required.
